Don’t Pay People To Turn Your Money into Money

Category: Banking – Eric – 2:25 pm

coinstarI was walking by the Coinstar machine at my local grocery store the other day, and it dawned on me how stupid it is to use the machines.  They charge nearly 10% to turn your money into money.  Doesn’t that seem silly?

I have a bank account.  My bank will take my coins and deposit them into my account or give me cash back for free.  If your bank will not do that for you, it is time to find another bank.  I understand wanting to turn your coins into cash, but do not pay someone for that service.  Coins are the same legal tender as bills, and merchants in the United States that take cash can’t discriminate against coins.

Often, stores will let you use the coin sorter for free if you spend the money there or will take a gift card instead of cash.  If you are going to buy things there anyway, that is a fair deal.  If not, don’t do it.  Go to the bank and get it done for free.

Why spend money somewhere when you can go somewhere else for the same service for free?
